Norrbotten Region in the north of Sweden has successfully implemented the latest version of MobiMed ePR, MobiMed 5, as part of its newly launched integration of Ortivus’ ambulance electronic patient records with Norrbotten’s new overarching medical record system, Cambio Cosmic.
The region had previously used MobiMed Monitor for monitoring and Aweria software for documentation of ambulance patients. To bridge the gap between pre-hospital and in-hospital care systems and optimise workflows, reduce delays, and improve patient outcomes, Norrbotten Region embarked on an ambitious journey with Ortivus and Cambio to replace Aweria with MobiMed ePR for ambulance staff and synchronise it with Cambio Cosmic used by hospitals.
The implementation went live on November 27 after an intensive four months of extensive testing, training, and the installation of a new redundant production environment. By enabling real-time data exchange, the rollout has enhanced quality of care, increased safety, reduced administrative burdens, and improved workflow efficiency for both emergency medical teams and hospital staff.
Significant focus was placed on ensuring that patient data transferred between the two systems remained accurate and secure. This involved mapping data fields between MobiMed and Cosmic and ensuring that all critical information – vital signs, treatments administered, medications, and observations – was captured and translated without loss or misinterpretation.
Additionally, measures were implemented to validate and secure data during transmission, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations and safeguarding patient privacy.
Continuum of care
The result is a significant step forward in connecting the region’s care chain and establishing a true continuum of care that provides comprehensive, coordinated, and continuous services to individuals across all stages of their health journey, no matter where they are or who treats them.
Norrbotten hospital staff now have quick and reliable access to ambulance records and can prepare for patient arrival, and patients can now see their ambulance episode in their care records.
At the heart of the integration is the development of secure and scalable APIs that allow seamless communication between the Ortivus MobiMed and Cambio Cosmic systems. These APIs ensure data can be exchanged in real time, enabling EMS teams to send pre-hospital patient data to hospitals.
To achieve this, standardised data formats such as HL7 (Health Level Seven) and FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources) were used. These international interoperability standards ensure that the systems can share data efficiently and consistently, even though they were designed with different architectures and purposes.
New functionality
The latest version of MobiMed ePR is providing new functionality to Norrbotten’s ambulance service to make day-to-day tasks easier for both paramedics and administrators. New features include:
- Enhanced user experience (UX/UI): Includes both day and night modes, designed for improved usability and operator comfort
- Quick user switching: Enables a multicrew team to log in during their shift and switch quickly between users without the need to log in or out, enhancing convenience and saving time
- Standard reports: Standard reporting capabilities support compliance reporting
- Improved architecture: Enhances data integrity across mission, incident, and care episodes
With more than 30 ambulances serving a population of 250,000, Sweden’s largest geographical region jumped at the opportunity to make the transition from ambulance to hospital better and safer for patients and healthcare staff alike.
Tommy Mattsson, Technical Manager and Operations Lead for Emergency Care at Norrbotten Region, said: “Ortivus has demonstrated great flexibility and has been available for changes and configuration adjustments, which was crucial as we simultaneously implemented Cosmic.
“Despite resource constraints, we managed to complete all necessary integrations for phase 1 according to the schedule. The cooperation and communication between all parties involved have been key to overcoming challenges and laying the foundation for improved healthcare information management in the region.”
Ortivus project manager Nicklas Trygg also highlighted the strong commitment from all parties: “All the work on installations, customisations, integrations (including with SOS Alarm, population registers, and Cambio Cosmic), testing, training, and deployment has been made possible thanks to excellent collaboration.
“The region’s focus on healthcare needs has been a critical success factor, especially considering that Cambio Cosmic was simultaneously implemented as the region’s overarching medical record system on November 23.”
